The A Scow is the largest and fastest of the scow family of sailboats. Mainly sailed in Minnesota and Wisconsin, it requires a crew of five to seven. As the oldest one-design sailing fleet in North America, it is has a long history of rules of design, or scantlings, the first of which were written in 1901. Sailors race for trophies that date back to the late 1800s. Given its large sails, lightly ballasted keel, and 38-foot (11.6m) length, the A Scow is the largest sailboat that regularly tips over. A feature-length documentary about the A Scow, The Ultimate Ride, was released in 2006. A Scows are currently built by Melges, with a new developmental design competitor version from VictoryByDesign.
