Developed in 1954 from a design by Uffa Fox (see also Day Sailer), the Albacore is raced in Washington DC, Virginia, Maryland, New York, Florida, New Jersey, and Eastern Canada. (Outside of North America, the Albacore is raced mainly in Britain.) The boat is well represented on the one-design regatta circuit of the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association (CBYRA). A planing dinghy with rounded bilges and a plumb bow, the Albacore has a 240-pound (109kg) hull that resembles a 15-foot (4.6m) Thistle. A deep centerboard assures maneuverability, and rigging and sail controls enable successful depowering in strong winds. Over 8,000 Albacores have been built, with Ontario Yachts as the main builder in North America. The boat is often used for junior and adult training programs.
