The Buccaneer 18, a doublehanded racer and day sailer, was designed in 1966 by Rod Macalpine-Downy and Dick Gibbs. It premiered at a 1967 regatta sponsored by Yachting Magazine, where it took second place, after a Thistle. The Buccaneer is a centerboard boat that planes in 8-10 knots of wind and has an integrated spinnaker launch tube and roller furling jib. The boat's waterline beam is wide enough to make a stabilizing trapeze unnecessary. Over 5,000 Buccaneers have been built, with Nickels Boat Works as the present-day producer (builder also of the Lightning, Rebel, and Snipe). The Buccaneer races throughout the United States.
