This boat for families or couples was designed at Catalina Yachts in 1983 as a more modern version of the builder's Omega 14, with the addition of a cuddy, a foredeck, and a slightly longer hull. The Capri 14.2 wasn't intended as a racing class, but owner Frank Butler had built the boats in large numbers so that they were affordable and sold well, and new owners formed racing fleets on their own. Rigged simply for casual daysailing, with a main and an overlapping jib, the 14.2 can be built with either a fin keel or a retractable centerboard. Over 5,200 have been built so far. A redesign in 1996 brought several changes, mostly to tighten and refine the hull structure, creating the "Mod 3" version of the boat. There are 13 active U.S. fleets, distributed widely.
