Designed in the 1950s by Conrad Gulcher and Uus van Essen, the Flying Dutchman was a class with many fleets worldwide by the 1960s. It is a 19 foot 10 in. (6m) dinghy sailed doublehanded with a single trapeze for the crew and a hiking strap (similar in this regard to the International 420 and International 505). A large, symmetric spinnaker is launched from a spinnaker chute. As a dinghy that sails an overlapping headsail-a 150% genoa-the Flying Dutchman is a rarity. Its lightweight hull easily planes upwind. The Flying Dutchman is a development class; it became an Olympic class at the 1960 Olympic Games in Naples. There are about a dozen active fleets in the U.S. For more information, read the Flying Dutchman Wikipedia article.
