Designed in 1957 by Gordon "Sandy" Douglass, the Flying Scot was inducted into the American Sailboat Hall of Fame in 1998, the first centerboard dinghy to be so honored. This extremely popular 19-foot dinghy with main, jib, and spinnaker has a low-displacement hull and can plane at 15 knots. The boat is a smaller version of the Highlander, which Douglass had designed in 1951. Both of these designs were preceded by Douglass's Thistle; the Flying Scot is the first of Douglass's boats to go into fiberglass production from the beginning. The Flying Scot can be sailed singlehanded, although two or three sailors is the standard. More than 5,300 Flying Scots have been built, and there are more than 100 one-design fleets in the U.S. and Canada. For more information, read the Flying Scot Wikipedia article.
