Similar to a Laser, the Force 5 is a 14-foot (4.3m) singlehanded dinghy that is still built in the U.S. It was designed in 1972 by Fred Scott and Jack Evans. Falling out of production with the ascendance of the Laser, the Force 5 was reintroduced in 1994 by Weeks Yacht Yard. The rudder and centerboard were made of mahogany until the recent advent of fiberglass versions. The Force 5 is designed for singlehanded racing, although two or even three people can daysail. The boat has a mainsail only. Sailing controls are easily accessible, and with a "junior" sail option, the boat offers versatility for lighter-weight sailors. The class association was formed in 1986. Over 15,000 boats have been sold worldwide. In the U.S., fleets are strongest in the North and in Florida and California.
