The Formula 18 (F18) is a sport catamaran that was launched in 1993 and has since spawned racing fleets worldwide. By the year 2000, world championships drew as many as 150 boats, and qualifying races now limit the number of competitors. This two-person boat flies a mainsail, jib, and asymmetric spinnaker. Lightweight crews race with a smaller jib and spinnaker to keep different crews competitive, although strength and fitness are always necessary. The Formula 18 is a development class whose design "formula" is free enough that the boat's 11 professional builders each offer their own version of the boat, thousands of which have been built worldwide. The North American class association is divided into a Southern and a Northern Area, the latter including the Midwest. The Formula 18 is an International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Recognized Class Association. For more information, read the Formula 18 Wikipedia article.
