The Highlander was designed in 1951 by Gordon "Sandy" Douglass, who had already designed the Thistle. Douglass would go on to develop a smaller and more popular version of the Highlander, the Flying Scot). The Highlander is still a popular one-design in the upper Midwest and is also sailed on lakes in the South. Over 1,000 boats have been built, and there are fourteen fleets still active, mostly in Indiana and Ohio. At 20 feet in length overall and with a large cockpit, this broad-beamed centerboard daysailer is one of the longest dinghies racing. It is valued for its stability and as a comfortable boat on which to learn to sail. For more information, read the Highlander Wikipedia article.
