The International One Design was designed in 1936 by the Norwegian Bjarne Aas, whom Cornelius Shields had commissioned when, seeing a previous boat that Aas had designed, Shields envisioned a new version of it as a one-design class. Racing of the IOD began on the Long Island Sound the following year, and strict class rules were established in 1946. With a length of 33 feet (10m), the IOD was intended for harbor racing and daysailing. It has an open cockpit and a single mast with a main and jib. There are 10 racing fleets worldwide, of which six are in the U.S.: two each in New York and on Cape Cod, one in Maine, and one on the San Francisco Bay. The class was the first to be designated an International Classic Yacht by the ISAF. The IOD is an International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Classic Yacht Class.
