The J/105 is an offshore keelboat designed in 1990 by Rod Johnstone (see also J/24, J/30, JY15) for shorthanded racing. Often raced with four or five people but capable of sailing singlehanded, this 34.5-foot boat features a very large asymmetric spinnaker and a class 110% jib. The large spinnaker is made possible by a retractable bowsprit, which was built on the J/105 from the beginning of its production at J/Boats - the first boat to be produced this way. An asymmetric kite and roller furler also contribute to easy handling. The J/105 was chosen as Sailing Magazine's Racer/Cruiser of the Year in 1992. There are over 720 boats worldwide in over 25 fleets, many of them found on the U.S. coastline and Great Lakes, with an average of 40 boats appearing at North American regattas.
