This two-person centerboard dinghy, used in college sailing, was designed by Rod Johnstone in 1989. Johnstone, of J/Boats, also designed the J/24, J/30, and J/105. The JY15's one-piece aluminum mast flies a main, jib, and spinnaker, and a trapeze for the crew is included. The boat's planing hull is constructed from an impact-resistant, positive-flotation composite of plastic, foam, and fiberglass, and features curved sides to make hiking more comfortable. The rudder and somewhat small centerboard can be kicked up for trailering. There are over 3,000 boats in the U.S. and 80 active fleets nationwide, almost exclusively in the eastern half of the country, with the strongest representation in the Northeast.
