All boats in the Laser series are part of the same one-design class. They share the same hull design and are cat-rigged. The most popular racing dinghy in the world for both youth and adults, the 13-foot-10-inch Laser was designed by Bruce Kirby and put into production in the early 1970s. The Laser 4.7 alters only the lower mast section and sail size, using a sail smaller than the ones on the original Laser or the Laser Radial. Youth sailors (75-120 lbs.) can use the 4.7 and then later swap in the mast section and larger sails of the Laser or Radial. As a singlehanded youth training boat, the 4.7 is sailed worldwide and is popular throughout Canada and the U.S. The Laser 4.7 is an International Sailing Federation (ISAF) International Centreboard Class Association.
