The Martin 16 is an unsinkable sportboat designed for accessibility by sailors with mobility impairments. All controls are accessible from an ergonomic helm seat, including a joystick control for the rudder. Typically raced with two people but easily sailed by one, the Martin 16 is rigged with an asymmetric spinnaker on a deck-mounted, retractable sprit. "Sip and puff" wheelchair technology can be installed in order to allow paraplegic sailors to steer the boat with their breath. Splash guards make the boat a comfortable training vessel for able-bodied or disabled sailors. Dan Fitzgibbon, Australian world champion of the International Federation for Disabled Sailing (IFDS), is developing a variant, the doublehanded Martin 162, which gains power with a rig derived from the 29er. Martin 16's are being raced in ten countries, with fleets spread across both Canada and the U.S.
