The MC Scow is a 16-foot cat-rigged dinghy that is usually raced singlehanded but can be doublehanded under favorable weather and weight conditions. Based on a design dating back to the 1950s by Henry Melges, Sr., the MC Scow was inspired by the J-Scow, which had a smaller mainsail and in turn was modeled on the M16 but without a jib. When the MC Scow outperformed the Johnson Boat Works' J-Scow, Johnson switched to production of M-Scows until Melges Performance Sailboats bought the other company out. The boat is still in production by Melges. With over 2400 boats and 85 fleets in the U.S., the MC Scow is most popular as a lake boat in the Midwest.
