Designed by Reichel/Pugh, the Melges 32 was first built in 2005. Its mast, rudder, sprit, and keel fin are carbon fiber, and it has an asymmetric spinnaker. Its tall mast can be rigged with a gin pole. With its almost-flat hull, the boat planes easily downwind. It is typically raced with a crew of five or six, and class rules specify a weight limit of 1387 pounds (629 kg) as well as owner/driver requirements and limitations on the number of professional crew. The Melges 32-an updated and longer version of the popular Melges 24-is most concentrated in the midwestern U.S., but individual boats are also found up and down the East and West Coasts and in Toronto.
