The Moore 24 was designed in 1968 for the Midget Ocean Racing Association (MORA) to use in the 1972 Transpacific Yacht Race (TransPac). Its initial designer, Santa Cruz surfer and sailor George Olson, was also responsible for the Olson 25, and the Olson 30. According to legend, Olson was ready to use the future Moore 24's first prototype mold as a sled when Ron Moore salvaged the mold and made a definitive adjustment to the shape. Moore expanded the hull's beam by about a foot, resulting in a width of 6 feet 8 inches, as well as a characteristic slight hull asymmetry, although the boat still seems to tack evenly. Perhaps the first ULDB designed, the Moore 24 has a lead keel and aluminum-shaft fiberglass rudder. Boats are actively raced on the West Coast, and more than 150 have been built.
