Said to have begun as a sketch on the back of a cocktail napkin in California in the early 1960s, the Santana 22 was the first boat by prolific designer Gary Mull. A first run of 747 boats in fiber-reinforced plastic appeared in 1965. One-design racing was soon established on the San Francisco Bay, where the Santana 22 still enjoys a following. In 2001 there was an update of some rigging, hardware, and cosmetic and structural features, but essential elements remained consistent with existing one-design rules. The boat remains in production at W.D. Schock Corp. The hull design on this sloop combines fine entrance with a wide beam; a main and jib are the only sails. Amenities include a large cockpit and sleeping quarters for four. A modified bulb keel in cast iron makes the boat suited to windy locales. For more information, read the Santana 22 Wikipedia article.
