This singlehanded racer was originally produced by the Alcort company in the fifties and became popular for racing beginning in the sixties. The Sunfish class was established in 1969. The boat's hull measures close to 14 feet but weighs only 120 lbs, making the Sunfish easy to transport on a trailer or car-top rack. The boat can be sailed using nothing but the sheet and tiller, with additional rigging added for racing. The shallow "board boat" hull is resistant to swamping; it is also hard-chined for planing, and the boat's speed earns it a low Portsmouth rating. Minor changes in 1972 included a sturdier rudder attachment. Given its low cost and simplicity, the Sunfish is a worldwide favorite, with half a million boats built and over 1,000 annual racing events. The Sunfish is now being built at Vanguard and was inducted into the American Sailboat Hall of Fame. The Sunfish is an International Sailing Federation (ISAF) International Centreboard Class Association. For more information, read the Sunfish Wikipedia article.
